What is a Routing Number?

A routing number is a code of nine digits which is used to identify a US financial institution. It may also be known as an RTN, an ABA routing number, or a transit routing number. The American Bankers Association (ABA) had originally created routing numbers to streamline the distribution of paper checks on a large scale. Banks use routing numbers to guide the exchange of funds between themselves and from each other. Usually, most personal checks can be found at the bottom left corner with the routing code. A routing number indicates where the bank branch you opened your account is located. The other term is “Account Number,” it’s located at the bottom of your personal search, just to the right of your routing. Your bank account number is a unique identifier. Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) is a code defining the bank in a foreign transaction. For international purchase, the International Bank Account Number (IBAN) marks your personal account. Both SWIFT and IBAN were designed to standardize the financial institutions’ international identification systems.
